Life in a Day - Debuts Today

"What happens when you send a request out to the world to chronicle, via video, a single day on Earth? You get 80,000 submissions and 4,500 hours of footage from 192 countries. Producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald took this raw material -- all shot on July 24, 2010 -- and created "Life in a Day," a groundbreaking, feature-length documentary that portrays this kaleidoscope of images we call life.

It opens in Chicago, Los Angles, New York, San Francisco, Santa Monica and Seattle today, and in other cities across the U.S. on successive Fridays throughout the summer (see youtube.com/lifeinaday for the complete list so far). Entertainment Weekly gives it a B+ and calls it "our equivalent of that '80s art-film kaleidoscope 'Koyaanisqatsi.'" Which means maybe bring some aspirin." - excerpt from http://adage.com/article/the-media-guy/youtube-movie-today-facebook-movie/229005/.

The reason I am posting this blog and the trailer (below), is because I love watching and studying humanity in the context of a Christian worldview.  In fact, when you observe and study humanity through the lens of Scripture it means so much more.  Even though this work isn't a "Christian" production I am looking forward to watching it... I think it will give us a glimpse of God's view every day and therefore will put life in the right perspective.  Many times we take ourselves too seriously or we don't take ourselves seriously enough.  Many times we think life revolves around me.  Many times we think we are island unto ourselves.  Many times we think that God doesn't care.

God is at work through His Church... building and expanding His Kingdom here on Earth as it is in Heaven, one person at a time.  What does God have for you to do today?

Friday Mashup

What did I learn while being a bachelor for seven days?  Other than missing my family, I learned that I like to eat at random times (set meal times are overrated), it's really nice to be able to spread out like a starfish when sleeping, and that clean underwear doesn't magically appear back in my drawer.  I lived off of beans and weiners, honey nut cheerios, toast, pb+j sandwiches, cherry 7-Up (found it in the back of our pantry), chocolate milk, apples, and fast food.  Reading that you'd think that I gained weight over the week, but I actually lost weight (I am calling it the "bachelor diet").

The reason I lost a few pounds wasn't because of my diet, but was due to a little project I took on.  On Sunday, I realized that Angela's birthday is coming up quickly and that I must do something.  So, I thought she'd appreciate a renovation to our ensuite bathroom.  I set a goal of renovating our bathroom in four days for under $300.  Beginning that afternoon I proceeded to demo the bathroom.  Everything went fine until it came time to ripping out the sub-floor (comprised of a gallon of glue that soaked into 3/8" particle board.  Needless to say it came out in clumps.  After seven hours of chiseling, scraping, and using five belts up on my belt sander, the floor was down to the plywood.  It took three days for my index finger and palm to heal from the constant vibration of the metal scraper I used as a chisel.  I realized two days in that I wasn't going to be done by the time Angela got home.  When they got home last night, Angela came home to a present half-wrapped.  The tile is in, but the painting, trim, and other finishing touches are still to be done.  My new goal is to have it done by her actual birthday... and due to some thrifty shopping and clever reuses of old/leftover materials, I should come out under budget.  I'll post before and after pictures when it's all done.

Angela came home last night with a "great" surprise.  Charlie threw up in the car on the way home, so I got the pleasure of washing his clothes, car upholstery, and his car seat, while Angela raced him up to have a bath.  Gotta love that smell.  The whole time I'm cleaning up trying to keep from creating more mess, Ruby regaled me, undaunted, with her great exploits during her time at Nana and Papa's.

Today I am working at the Church, getting ready for Tal & Carmen's wedding tomorrow, our Sunday gathering, and our Waterballoon Volleyball match!  I hope you have a great weekend and that I get to see you Sunday!

Monday Morning Thoughts

What a great weekend.  I helped a Mark & Katy on Saturday morning with a stage of their move then headed off to a wedding reception that featured a burrito truck.  The owner of the truck is Arturo and he cooked my meals in Bible College.  It was good to see him again and hear about his crazy adventures.  His truck is normally parked at Cordova and Howe (down by the Pan Pacific hotel), but he caters the odd event as well.  Anyways, I had his original Gringa and wow, was it good!  Sometimes I wish my stomach was bigger.

Our Sunday gathering was a lot of fun.  Everyone seems more relaxed in the summer... especially when it's sunny.  I think it's because people have either just returned from vacation or are about to head out on one.  Tony did a phenomenal job leading us in worship... we are so blessed to have him in our Church family.  Vince was hot on the drums (although it might just have been the new skins he put on them :) ).  Our scripture for this week was tough, but good.

Last night I met with Dave P. at City Blends.  We sat on the patio and I think the mosquitoes had more to drink than we did.  Dave is taking a leadership class at the College this summer and part of that course is discussing aspects of leadership with other leaders.  It was a good time.

Isaac came over this morning at 7:00am to paint a cabinet I made for our sound equipment storage.  He's down in the garage working away and I'm sipping on tea upstairs typing a blog entry!  I'm trying out a new waterbased alkyd paint and it seems to be a beautiful thing.

I've got a meeting today and lots of miscellaneous stuff to take care of.  The rest of the week is work at the College, getting ready for Tal & Carmen's wedding, and getting ready for Sunday (message and water balloon volleyball)!  I hope you have a great week being the Church on Monday!

Friday Mashup

Woke up before my alarm today... love that!  Angela and the kids are over on the Island for a week visiting my parents, so that means I get to work on lots of projects and eat dinner at 8:00pm.

This week has been good... got a lot done at the Bible College, finished some reading in the evenings, and met with Tal & Carmen (they're getting married on July 30th).  I'm excited for them as they prepare to enter into holy wedlock.  The ceremony will be visually engaging.

This afternoon Isaac and I delivered some food to a 64 year old lady on disability. Reminder: if you're able, please continue to bring food on Sundays to stock our emergency food bank.  After our delivery, we tried out Dakota Joe's and I shared some thoughts on preparing sermons (from the little that I know).  Tonight I am meeting with Dave P.

I just found out, Calvin & Elisa had their baby!  Russel was born today and weighs in at 8lbs!

Tomorrow I will work some more and then enjoy a wedding reception featuring a burrito truck!  Looking forward to that (I'll post a photo after).

On Sunday, we will continue reflecting and applying Acts.  We'll also be giving out a free book that you can enjoy as summer reading.

Monday Morning Thoughts

Only the brave dared to enter the danger zone yesterday.  In spite of the overcast weather we had a lot of fun soaking each other.  There is something so satisfying about drenching someone who is dry.

During our gathering we did something a little different than normal, we replaced the sermon with an opportunity for people to come up and share something that God is doing in their life.  About eight came up and shared.  A common theme in the stories was that whenever they tried to live life for themselves or with their own understanding things didn't go well.  However, when they surrendered their life/choices to God, things worked out for good.  Simple lesson, but one we need everyday.

In reflection of Sunday, my hope is that the following is accomplished:
  1. We are encouraged to step forward in the faith.
  2. We are encouraged to share our stories with one another.
  3. We will step forward in creating a culture for openness, family ministry, and sharing.
  4. We integrate more personal stories in our gatherings.
If you would ever like to share something in one of our gatherings, please call or email me and we'll see how it can be communicated.  Next Sunday, we'll be back in the Word and hopefully hear another personal story in our gathering!

Have a great week... be bold.

Friday Mashup

Well, I completely forgot about the prayer walk yesterday!  I hope it went well.  My schedule memory is sadly tied to my phone and if I don't enter it there, then my mind draws a blank.  I'm thankful for the people in our Church who are passionate about prayer... prayer is the greatest demonstration of faith as it ultimately places trust in God and not ourselves or others.  Man, do I need to grow in prayer.

So, today I will spend time in prayer and sermon preparation with Isaac.  Tomorrow, if the weather is good, we'll be doing some yard work over at the Krikau's.  On Sunday we have our gathering followed by a water fight (I hope the weather works for this day too).

On Tuesday I went golfing with Dave, his Uncle, and brother-in-law.  Nice guys.  The weather was perfect; my score wasn't.  It was my first time at Cedar Ridge (par 3 course) and I really enjoyed the course.  However, you only need a PW, 9, and putter as just about every hole is close to 100 yards.  Steve Biggerstaff has some good comments about golf in his blog today (click here).

Have a great weekend and I hope to see you Sunday.

Tuesday Morning Thoughts

Well, I had a great long weekend.  I took yesterday off and bummed around the house with the family.  I tried my hand at being an electrician and replaced the dimmer switch in our bedroom (the last one burned out just before our gathering on Sunday).  I also finished off the book, Deep Church by Jim Belcher.  It was a really good read.  I always know a book is a good read, when I can't just rip through because there are multiple challenging statements and ideas.  I'll be giving a copy of this book to our elders and some of our ministry leaders for them to read and process too.

Last night we had my sister and her family over for dinner to celebrate her 29th birthday.  It was a good meal... steak, mashed potatoes, caesar salad, and homemade oreo ice cream cake!  It was great to have them over as laughing with family is always the best.  We skyped my mom into the evening so she could see some of her grandchildren playing together.

I love my wife.  Not only is she a fantastic better half, but she continues to be an awesome mom and great cook!  However, she does like to move furniture and this always puzzles me...  for the last two weeks I've seen every piece of furniture in every possible spot (she is like an ant... for a small gal, she can move objects 50 times her weight).  Sometimes she recruits friends when they're over to help with the insanity.  However, there are certain items that only I can move (it's why she married me) and this is how I get dragged into the craziness.  Yesterday, we put it all back to the original way we had everything... not saying any more.

Sunday was a great gathering... Tony lead us in worship.  I always appreciate Tony's heart (he's genuine... a rarity in today's world) and he's got talent (and yet he's humble).  We looked at the third act of the story of the cripple being healed.  There are lots of things to learn from this passage, but the thing that stuck out to me the most was while I despise the Sadducee response, I have to admit that I often respond to God like they did.  I am often more concerned about comfort, stature, and wealth, then I am about worshiping the Messiah.  I hope I wasn't too harsh... I often feel that I beat people up more in sermons than build them up (I hope that's me being overly critical).  Some people like that style, but not me.  The Gospel is Good News (albeit there is a critical component to the Good News that reveals the bad news [we are sinners]), but the Good News is good because it trumps the problem of sin.  I'll also have to clean up my language next year when I recap the highlights of the bocce tournament (it was one of those had to be there moments that I won't repeat here).... let's just say, when you're tournament winner's name is Harry and I describe the last play of the match, next time I will be calling them 'spheres'.

Following the service we were invited over to the Chapman's house for a pool party.  It was a lot of fun... hamburgers, sun, and a pool.  Their house was also kid friendly (love that).  It was good to get to know them better, have fun, and enjoy each others company.  We also discovered that Charlie has no idea on how to eat ice cream cones (he starts at the wrong end).

Tonight I'm going golfing with Dave, his Uncle, and I think, a fourth person.  I hope the weather clears up.  I've got my 'Off' ready to go.

The rest of the week for me is a few meetings, working at the College, and some more reading.  I hope that this week we will fall more in love with Jesus and therefore be less in love with ourselves/world.

Friday Mashup

Lots of thoughts rolling around in my head and heart this morning.  I'm praying for Zain (he was admitted back to Abbotsford Hospital).  I'm praying for the Khela's.  I'm praying for this weekend's message that I might be accurate and effective in communicating its purpose.

I've been thinking lots about our Church and wrestling with what we do and why we do it.  A phrase from one of Jerry Cook's lectures at PLBC last year is rippling through my life.  He made a statement that, I believe was birthed of the Holy Spirit, "to the degree that the Church is wrapped up in its world is to the same degree it loses its voice."  It's from the 'in the world' but not 'of the world' vein.  It smacks of what our Church has been challenged with as we journey through Acts... will someone stand, will someone stand with you, and will someone speak prophetically?  It's that last question that relates most to what Jerry stated.  To the degree that I am entangled in my culture is to the degree that I lose my prophetic voice.   It is to the degree that what I say loses power.

Our Church knows the teachings and way of Christ, but we get entangled by our culture.  Through our own selfishness, laziness, and lack of discipline we give in to the comforts of our culture.  We live like our culture, look like our culture, and talk like our culture.  So when we do speak, we are just another person adding to the noise.  My hope is that we will begin to see a renewal of a Christ-centered culture in our Church where Jesus' teachings mean more on Monday or Saturday than they do on Sunday.  My hope is that living with Christ as our focus will change what we do and why we do it.  Not out of a sense of legalism, elitism, or separatism, but simply because following Christ looks much different than following our flesh.  It is my understanding that the closer we follow Christ, the deeper we will go into our culture/world and when we speak, our voice will be heard.  Perhaps, people will come to Christ.  Perhaps, many will be added to their number.

I could go on all day about that "stuff"...

Here's the explanation for the photo above:  1) a coworker at PLBC gave me a book to read yesterday, called "Deep Church" by Jim Belcher (what a last name) and I'm really looking forward to reading it (hopefully this weekend sometime); and 2) a while ago, my neighbour gave me an electric tea pot that brews loose leaf tea... I've been using it at the Church and I love it.

Today I'm hanging out with Isaac (our Summer Intern) for a bit, working on Sunday's message, and doing miscellaneous tasks.  Tomorrow, I'm hanging out with the family, working a bit more, and will mow the lawn

I'll leave you with the 2010 video report from the US Foursquare Church (it includes International figures).

Monday Morning Thoughts

Well... we got to hear Isaac's voice again on Sunday... and the rhythmic styles of Aaron on the cajon.  We continued in Acts and discovered that doing ministry (being the Church) doesn't require self-made ministers, but people who fully lean on the power and righteousness of Jesus.  We learned that God gave Israel multiple chances to hear the Good News and that the surprise of the Good News really shouldn't have been a surprise at all... all of history and Scripture points to Jesus as the Christ.

Following the service about 30-40 of us headed over to Centennial Park for a picnic and afternoon fun.  Peter and Harry took first place in our bocce tournament (we'll award the trophy this Sunday).  The kids played in the park and clapped at mosquitoes.  It was relaxing and enjoyable.

Sunday evening was pretty quiet for us.  I played in the back yard with the kids.  Angela did some work inside.  I sent a text to Josh P. to say goodbye (he's headed to NWT for four months on a mineral exploration venture).  I also asked him to take some pictures of wolverines.  I then sent a 'to do' list to Isaac and watched a few episodes of The Office from season two and then hit the hay.

On Saturday night we had the Mannings over for schmores (spelling?).  It was fun.  Our kids ran around and got marshmallow all over themselves.  We told a few embarrassing stories, shared our favourite movies, and reflected on the difficulties of dating when you have little kids.

This morning I'm back to work at Pacific Life Bible College.  It's a beautiful morning and I'm looking forward to a week of great weather.  I've also got a few meetings and wood working projects.  I hope you have a beautiful week being the Church on Monday!

Saturday Mashup

We may have lost, but at least we looked good doing it (took home the best dressed award)!  16 brave people from our Church took the field yesterday morning at 8:30am to compete for the Canada Day Softball Tournament Cup.  We were cheered on by friends and family members.  Although many of us had either never played baseball or hadn't in over 15 years, we managed to hold the 'pro' teams to 6 runs... an inning (tournament max per inning).

Even though we lost our first two games badly, we had a lot of fun doing it.  It was great to see a real cross section of our Church family participating.  We had the most spirit of any of team (many thanks to Tony 'The Mouth' O'Hara who kept the chatter going all day).  There were lots of high fives, laughs, and pulled muscles.   Many people put their body on the line and will be feeling the effects long into next week.

I think we could have been compared to a diesel engine... we were powerful, but needed a little more time to warm up.  By the time we got to the third game, we hit our stride and destroyed the competition 11-4.  Isaac was striking them out, Christian was like a gazelle in the outfield, and Renee hit a foul ball so hard it went way out of the park and through a van window.  I was up at bat a few turns later and hit the same van (although with not enough power to break another window)... the van had been parked there all day and we were the only team to hit it.  And we did it twice.

It was a great day, but both Angela and I were so pooped after we didn't have the energy to take our kids to the fireworks.  Instead we opted for sleeping for 9 hours.  I am sore and moving slow this morning, but I was able to get out and mow our lawn.  We're looking forward to having the Manning's over later for a bonfire.

I'm really looking forward to Church tomorrow.  Following our gathering, we're heading over to Centennial Park for a picnic and bocce.  Bring your own everything.
